Director's Reflections — United We Stand by Jan Adrian, MSW |
Dear Friends,
I have learned to look for the gifts in every experience. I don't want to judge any experience as good or bad, because I don't see the whole picture. I don't know what good may come from something that seems bad at the time.
This is hard to do with some of the recent terrorist attacks. Their purpose seems to be to instill fear in us and set us against each other. Their acts are horrific; yet I am already seeing some good come out of them.
Last night I attended a gathering sponsored by the Interfaith Council of Sacramento. It was called "United We Stand" and was held at the local mosque. It was attended by about 500 people including Muslims, Jews, Christians, Hindus, and non-religious people. The speakers included a priest, an imam, a Christian pastor, a rabbi, a sheriff, a judge, someone from the FBI, and many more. The message from everyone was the same — we are all brothers and sisters that need to connect with each other and support each other. I could feel the love in the room — exactly what we need to counteract the fear that the terrorists are trying to instill in us.
It seems that loss and tragedy often lead to an appreciation of what matters most. Many of us have experienced this as a result of a cancer diagnosis. Cancer can feel like a terrorist that instills fear in us. It often leads to an increasing awareness of our true nature and the felt connection with the whole of life, including a greater appreciation of friends and loved ones. I love the way Alicia Keyes expresses our true nature as she sings, "We are here for all of us." (See link below.)
As I'm thinking about planning Healing Journeys events for 2016, I'm aware of feeling more than ever a need to connect with others who are also on a healing journey. We have so much to offer each other as a result of our own experiences, research, and vulnerability. In Healing Journeys' programs for 2016 we want to offer workshops and retreats that create opportunities for interacting, sharing, connecting, and supporting each other.
As the year ends, I know you are being given many opportunities to donate to worthy causes. I feel very grateful to those of you who have already included Healing Journeys in your year-end giving. I appreciate you more than you know. You are making a difference in the lives of people who need resources for thriving, even as they are living with cancer. If you haven't donated yet, you can do so here. Thank you!
We truly are here for all of us. Here's the link to Alicia's song: www.youtube.com/watch?v=HrKmDgk8Edg
