Navigating Shoulds, Musts, and Nevers

By Kerri J. Geary © 2017

Stunted. Very stunted. Exasperatedly, extensively, peevishly stunted by shoulds, musts, and nevers. Oh yeah, no adverbs. Adverbs bad. Never use adverbs. Adverbs path to hell.

So many paths to hell.

Every story should be a healing story.
Writing is like real life and if writing isn’t a priority, then life must not be a priority. In order to heal prioritize writing! Oh and there’s a few other priorities, shoulds, musts, and nevers if healing is going to happen. Must eat only nutritious food. Never eat sugar, sugar feeds cancer. Must take these supplements and these medications AND must take them at these specific times or they won’t be efficacious. Don’t forget about the probiotics, the digestive enzymes, and the Chinese herbs. Must eat this but not that. Rat-a-tat-tat-tat. Avoid the paths to hell.

Should wake up every day and write 250 words minimum if writing is important, if life is important. Every morning eat breakfast first thing if body is valued. Should wake up every day and meditate first thing before sunrise. Most significant practice of all! Oh and this chemo brings on extreme fatigue, but must take it to stop the growing little darlings. Chemo bad, never take chemo, chemo provides a one way ticket to the underworld! Must not drink coffee. Coffee bad. Coffee like adverbs, leading straight to hell. Never drink coffee. Drink coffee, but do it consciously. Should be conscious in every action. Must be like Buddha and take the middle path. Must love everyone. Never forget about oneness. To be authentic, must express inner bitch.

Must follow the doctor’s orders, or else will surely never heal. Must not trust Western medicine, or will definitely die by the methods. Must not drink alcohol or do drugs because body can’t handle it. Should use cannabis to heal, much more natural. Should try these funky monkey berries from Minne-hoo-ka-cha-cha. Cousin used them and healed cancer in six months. Should take this specialized supplement from amazing, fabulous MLM because nothing else cures cancer like this thing. Company is only an MLM because that way no money has to be spent on advertising. Should really be getting a process every day to get to the core memory causing the cancer. Wearing this bracelet will balance all energies and cancer will go away. Only sold through an MLM. Must try it. This doctor in Switzerland is the best there is, must go to be totally healed. Never trust an American doctor. Must visit Dr. John in Brazil and get Spiritual Healing. This is the only way! To be successful, should take these five actions every day. To be a rock star, must achieve these seven practices every day. Never do these seven things.

To fucking go crazy, pay attention to all input! Twenty-five years of buzzing, never stops.

What has the power to take you away from you?
Overwhelm and confusion take me away from me.

What has the power to bring you back to you?
Sitting in stillness, seeking answers from within my awesome, energetic, trustworthy, kick-ass self brings me back to me. I AM the only authority on what I need to do, not do; want, not want; express, not express; eat, not eat; drink, not drink. Sometimes I give my authority away, sometimes I don’t. Almond Joy has nuts, Mounds don’t. I AM perfectly imperfect! Can be right, can be wrong. Can know what is best for me and can falter. Can be hijacked by extreme emotions, and can always come back to myself. As a conscious, self-loving, fierce, compassionate, creative thriver, I want everyone to know, I got it.
Unless I don’t.
