After surviving cancer, writing teacher Sandra Marinella formed the “Story You Need to Tell” Project to help others find and write their narratives. Working with cancer patients, veterans, and writers, Marinella was inspired to tell their stories and how they used writing to move forward. She shares these stories and her own cancer story in The Story You Need to Tell—Writing to Heal from Trauma, Illness, or Loss.
When Sandra offered to facilitate an online book group for Healing Journeys, we did a pilot group before offering it to you. In addition to being an engaging writer, Sandra is a compassionate, organized, and wise facilitator. Reading her book and discussing it with her leadership was both a healing and inspiring experience. Here are some comments from participants:
• The book maintains a balance between what kind of writing is healing and how to do it. A good balance between research and personal stories from many people.
• The compassion and insights offered by Sandra was unyielding. Generous listening, thoughtful responses, and deep encouragement opened my own mind and heart to be open to the sharing that took place.
• I love the concept of writing to heal. This content and format are a great way to get started and be supported in the process.
You are invited to join the book group (using Zoom) that will begin in August. It is limited to the first 12 people that register. Our first meeting will be an introduction/get acquainted meeting, followed by 4 weekly meetings for book discussion, and one meeting giving opportunity for participants to read something they have written. No writing experience is required. Writing is encouraged, but not mandatory, as part of the group.
Dates: Wednesdays, starting August 4, 2021 (Meets August 4, 11, 18, 25, September 1, and 8)
Time: 3:00 – 4:30 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time
Cost: Registration fee of $25, $50, $100, or $0 (your choice), and price of the book, The Story You Need to Tell.
Please Note: No one will be turned away because of finances. We trust that people will support Healing Journeys with whatever they can afford.
